Hi everyone I do apologize for my short hiatus from the blog. I should be on top of from hence forth. Anywho, I was at the BAP pledge social last night and I noticed a few things I wanted to share to ensure you all don't make the same mistakes.
1.Handshake. I got some good handshakes and some that need some work. Handshakes are SO important. Recruiters can get a good evaluation on you just from that first handshake. You want for handshake to be firm, have a smile on your face, and to make eye contact while delivering your perfect handshake. I got some handshakes last night that I like to refer to as "baby hands". The baby hands have a loose grip and the wrist is flimsy. It really is a horrible experience to have a handshake in that manner. It says you are weak. I hate to sound like a football coach or something, but it's true. Don't be a weakling. Be confident, strong, and commanding! Also, don't break their either though. Don't go Schwarzenegger on them. Remember just firm up that wrist, firm up that grip, give them a nice pretty smile, and make eye contact. As a general rule try to meet the recruiter's firmness in the grip make a slight adjustment.
2. Elevator speeches. These are so important. I heard some pretty good one's and some pretty bad one's. We will start with some of the bad things I noticed starting with "uh". I heard some that started off great. I heard their name and major and then it was like they hit a wall. Don't hit a wall like that it is awkward for you and the recruiter. BE PREPARED! Have that thing down and a couple of variations because the speech will vary in certain situations. Practice it. For more info on exactly what should go into your elevator speech, I recommend talking to Allison Jacobs or Pam Herbick in the Robinson Career Management Center.
3. Speak up! I talked to several recruits last night and I couldn't hear them. You must project yourself to further show your confidence. It will do you no good to quietly give your elevator speech and ask questions because the recruiter won't hear you. Again, you will come off as shy and WEAK! I apologize for the usage of the work weak, college football is upon us and I have got a litte fire in me today. Weaklings are not accepted. I digress. Please speak up and show your confidence. Recruiters are evaluating you on how well you will be in front of clients and they will not take a liking to quiet individuals as the clients will not likely prefer a quiet shy professional.
Ok guys, so that's all I have time for today. Take my advice and use it for round two in the coming meetings. These will get you very, very far in developing that important relationship with the recruiters! Best of luck to you all and enjoy the long weekend and college football!
